So, I discovered a new favorite movie: Brave. It's set in Scotland, features a headstrong tomboy of a princess, and focuses on her relationship with her mother. The boys in the story are only incidental (either the princes or potential suitors). It doesn't end with the princess getting married and living happily ever after with her new husband. The movie is about family, particularly the generation gap that develops between parents and their children.
My new favorite Disney princess is Merida of Clan Dunbroch. Right up there with Leia (she is a Disney princess now!) and Rapunzel.
It's funny. I've been re-watching Brave and some movies, I just skip to favorite bits. Not with Brave. I'd happily sit and watch the whole thing through over and over again. I think part of it is all the Scottish accents *swoon* and the story itself is just wonderful. Someone said Merida didn't learn anything in the movie. I beg to differ. She learned that her actions have consequences and how to take responsibility for them.
I want to read fanfic for Brave. I've already gone through everything on AO3 and I'm a little leery of FF.Net. Anyone have suggestions?
