I'm still around. I wish I could say that I've been too busy to post, but that would be a lie. I've been playing a lot of Star Wars: The Old Republic. And writing fic for it. Read them here if you're interested. I started my next history class today, after a two-month leave of absence. My next class is next month, and then start on my thesis. My plan is to finish it in time to graduate in May so I can start applying for teaching jobs ASAP. For those of you who don't remember, today is [ profile] umbralillium's birthday and tomorrow is mine. The past few years, I've offered to write gift fics for anyone who wishes to make a request that I would then post on my birthday. I'm not sure if I'll be able to manage anything this year, but go ahead and make a request in the comments anyway. I'll see if I can distract my muse from SWtOR long enough to write something else. I'll try to remember to post something in December offering gift fics for Christmas.

I managed to tweak my back while stretching of all things today and it's still not 100% despite going to the chiropractor. I'm hoping a good night's sleep will help. Having a tweaked back on my birthday is NOT my idea of fun.

But what if I don't WANT to distract you from writing about SWTOR? :) Anything from Vector's POV--maybe something in the past, before he became Killik? Or early in his Killik life? Anything is fine!

Happy, happy birthday to you! Your stories give me much joy...

Thank you very much.

It was the music that drew him out of his studies. The music most familiar to him was soft, sweet, and lyrical. This music, however, was sprightly, cheerful, and fast-paced. It made keeping still an impossibility. So, like any teenaged boy faced with a mystery, Vector Hyllus decided to investigate. His investigation led him to the Zabrak clan that lived outside the village. The adults were rather intimidating with their tattoos and horns, but the younger ones were more approachable, at least in Vector's opinion. Some of the other children avoided the Zabraks altogether. He didn't, because he found them interesting. At the moment, most of the clan seemed to be gathered in their common area. Some played instruments, the source of the music. Others danced together to the music. The rest stood together, either watching the dancing or talking amongst themselves.

He became so absorbed in watching that he didn't pay attention to his immediate surroundings and didn't notice anyone nearby until someone bowled him over. Rolling into a sitting position, he grimaced at the stains on his clothes. Mother will be furious with me. He looked up to see a younger Zabrak standing over him, looking contrite. She had bumps around the crown of her head, crimson skin, and developing curves. "I'm sorry. I wasn't watching where I was going."

"I shouldn't have been here in the first place," he admitted, taking the hand she offered to him and standing up. As they stood facing each other, he noticed that she was a little taller than him. Perhaps they would be the same height when they were both adults. Rather than comment on that, he continued his explanation, "I heard the music from my house in the village and had to come hear it more clearly."

"You don't have music?" She released his hand, looking in the direction of his village.

He stifled a laugh. "We do have music, but not like this. The dances we do to it are very stately and precise. Not... enthusiastic."

"Would you like to learn?" Her green eyes seemed to light up as she made the offer

Vector nodded, smiling at her eagerness. "I would, but perhaps we should introduce ourselves first? I'm Vector Hyllus."

"My name is Faz-Triz." She returned his bow with a playful one of her own. Then she took his hand and towed him into the clearing. "Now, the trick with this dance--"

They emerged from their meditations with a soft gasp of surprise. They rarely remembered anything from before so clearly. Why had this memory been so clear? That's when they registered the sound of music, familiar music. Getting to their feet, they followed the sound to the training area. The agent--Fazzis, she'd told them her name when she'd announced that she was no longer an intelligence agent--stood in the middle of the room, her head bowed. The music came from a speaker on the bench off to one side. As they watched, she began to dance. Jerky and hesitant at first, her movements became smoother and more fluid.

As she sped up to match the tempo of the music, they stepped forward to dance with her. Though clearly startled by their presence, she nevertheless adjusted to their presence. They matched her every movement as a look of fierce joy spread across her face. When the music stopped, they stood stock still with their hands resting on her waist. "That was... unexpected."

"I learned that dance from a Zabrak girl when I was a teenager." They dropped their hands when she moved away to pick up the bottle of water that waited. "She was very friendly and eager to teach me."

"What was her name?" Fazzis took a long drink of water.

They clasped their hands behind their back. "Faz-Triz."

"Are you sure?" She stood very still, her back to them.

They nodded, watching her carefully. "Quite sure."

After a long moment, she swayed and pressed a hand to her temple, hissing out a word. "Dammit."

"What is it?" They moved forward, lightly touching her back.

She shook her head. "Just a migraine coming. Help me to my quarters?"

"Of course." They did as she requested, helping her settle into bed with all the lights dimmed and everything quiet. "Is there anything Dr. Lokin can do?"

Fazzis shook her head again. "No. Best thing to do is sleep it off. Thank you, Vector."

"You're welcome." They squeezed her hand and reluctantly left, pausing outside her closed door to add, "Faz-Triz."

With that, they returned to their quarters to do some research.

Oooooh, I love the way you develop side stories with your player-characters and connections between people and it's wonderful! Studious little Vector tempted by music and dancing is a lovely image, you can really see the xenophilic tendencies that lead him to becoming the Dawn Herald...

I really wanted them to have met before, but neither remembered it at first. It took some thinking to figure out how it could have worked. Between what I knew of Vector and the backstory I have for Fazzis (that she doesn't remember), this is what I thought of. I'm glad you liked it!
